  Economies with a clear, established income driver — tourism in Cabo Verde; diamonds in Botswana; hydrocarbons in Equatorial Guinea, Algeria, Libya, and Gabon; diversified industry and deep capital markets in South Africa. Higher income but often concentrated, with inequality creating distance between the on-the-ground reality of most citizens and what the per-capita figure suggests.
  

• $10,000+: High-income outliers (🇲🇺, 🇸🇨)
  
  Island economies that deliberately built services-led, institution-backed models over decades. Not replicable at scale, but instructive as proof of concept.

Africa is home to 1.5 billion people and 65% of them live in countries with a GDP per capita under $2,000 — the ‘demographic core’ and the ‘fragile base.’

Here are three worth noting:

1. 🇳🇬 Nigeria. GDP per capita: ~$1,550. Africa’s most populous nation, with 240M+ people, sits firmly in the demographic core — currency depreciation has compressed its nominal figure significantly from its 2014 peak of ~$3,200.
   

2. 🇪🇹 Ethiopia. GDP per capita: ~$1,100. Africa’s second most populous nation and its fastest-growing economy at 9%+. Still sub-$1.5k despite a decade of some of the highest growth rates anywhere in the world — a reminder that GDP growth and GDP per capita tell different stories.
   

3. 🇨🇩 DRC. GDP per capita: ~$1,100. Sits atop an estimated $24 trillion in untapped mineral wealth: cobalt, coltan, copper, gold, & more. But has so far failed to convert its resource wealth into broad-based prosperity — no country on the continent illustrates the gap between resource endowment and human welfare more starkly.

In total, 29 of the continent’s 54 countries (~54%) sit below the $2,000 threshold.

But low per capita income doesn’t mean no market opportunity — it means nonconsumption & unmet demand at scale.

It means getting the product right — with contextual pricing, a contextual value proposition, and contextual distribution — unlocks an addressable base that dwarfs much of the world.

Burger King Nigeria offers the latest example. The franchise has grown from 6 restaurants in its first two years in Nigeria (2021 & 2022) to 25 today.

And it just launched ‘BK Small Chopzzz’ — a pack containing samosas, chicken wings, plantain cubes, spring rolls, onion rings, and puff-puff (deep-fried balls of dough) — for ₦1,800 (~$1.30).

It’s the second most affordable item on Burger King Nigeria’s entire menu, second only to 6-piece onion rings at ₦1,600 (~$1.17).

According to Burger King Nigeria MD/CEO Rushdi Ibrahim, “Small chops is not just a product. It is actually a way of life for Nigerians.” (True.)

And the pricing is deliberately designed to “fit into [local] consuming behavior” as “more and more Nigerians are looking for value and affordability.”

He adds: “Value does not mean being cheap. Value means value for money.”

The companies who’ve built at scale in Africa — the Celtels, Indomies, and M-Kopas — understand that deeply.

They didn’t see markets that were “too poor.”

They saw markets that were ripe for new thinking, new infrastructure, and new models.

Contrary to prevailing narratives, Africa isn’t composed of uniquely high-risk markets — but high-context ones.

It’s expanding from Eswatini — where it claims to have become the country’s largest e-commerce platform with 22,000 users (~2% of the country’s population) — to Nigeria, Africa’s most populous country with an estimated population of ~220 million.

The company is led by a 19-year-old University of California, Berkeley dropout and Thiel Fellow from Greenwich, Connecticut.

For the last decade, Nigeria’s most valuable fintech built payments technology on top of the banking system — relying on partner banks to hold deposits and settle funds.

But it just announced securing a banking license. Now it can hold the deposits itself.

“We can now control the value chain of payments in Nigeria,” CEO Olugbenga Agboola said. “Our destiny is now in our hands.”

The implications are significant:

• Faster settlements, better margins. By connecting directly to Nigeria’s clearing and settlement systems, Flutterwave can accelerate payouts to merchants and stop paying fees to the partner banks it previously relied on — a meaningful improvement to unit economics at scale.

KarmSolar, an Egyptian vertically-integrated solar utility company, secured ~$5.8M (€5M) in project financing debt from Eurobank (formerly Hellenic Bank).

Project details: The proceeds will be used to construct a 7.6-megawatt solar plant in southern Cyprus through the newly created KarmCyprus subsidiary.

Note: Eurobank will be repaid from the cash flow generated by the Cypriot solar plant. If it fails to generate enough cash, the bank’s recourse is limited to the plant’s assets and its contracts; KarmSolar’s main assets and balance sheet in Egypt are shielded from the project risk.

About KarmSolar: Founded in 2011, KarmSolar is Egypt’s pioneering solar energy utility company.

The company’s origins trace back to 2010 when CEO Ahmed Zahran set out to solve the energy problem of an off-grid farm in Egypt’s western desert.

The company initially developing a solar-powered water pumping solution, but has since evolved into a vertically integrated utility company that controls the entire value chain — from power generation to distribution to consumption.

Revenue model: KarmSolar is active in multiple verticals including water desalination and construction management, but its principal activity is operating hybrid solar power stations and selling electricity to clients.

In October 2025, Afridigest tracked 34 equity fundraises across Africa’s tech ecosystem — with total disclosed funding exceeding $280 million.

Beyond the headline numbers and the return of $100M mega-rounds, three patterns stood out:

1. Software isn’t eating Africa (yet), foundational infrastructure is

While VCs worldwide chase ‘asset-light’ businesses, Africa’s biggest breakthroughs remain asset-heavy — grounded in infrastructure and real-world systems.

• Spiro — announced raising $100M in October
  Hard assets: 60K+ electric motorcycles, over 100K motorcycle batteries, and 1.5K+ battery swap stations

• Moniepoint — announced raising $90M in October
  Hard assets: ‘millions’ of POS terminals (In 2023, the company said it was activating a new terminal every 30 seconds on average.)

• Taggadod — announced raising $26.3M in October
  Hard assets: a physical network of collection points, storage facilities, laboratories, biodiesel production factories, and collection vehicles

Capital continues to flow toward infrastructure: connectivity networks, energy systems, and payment rails that make everything else possible.

2. Francophone Africa is (still) up next

Over half of the equity fundraises in the month were by startups in Nigeria, Egypt, Kenya and South Africa — Africa’s dominant startup hubs.

But a quarter of the raises went to startups across Francophone Africa:

• Côte d’Ivoire: 4

• Cameroon: 1

• Gabon: 1

• Mali: 1

• Guinea: 1

The region’s deal value is still small in absolute terms, but its momentum is undeniable as funds across the continent are beefing up their ability to see & win deals in the region.

At the same time, local institutions like Cameroon Angels Network, Dakar Network Angels, and CDC-CI are writing checks and signaling that Francophone Africa is no longer peripheral to tech in Africa, but increasingly part of the core story.

Note: While Spiro’s largest market is Kenya today, it initially launched in Benin & Togo and could be considered yet another startup in the region.

3. Climate tech without the virtue signaling, AI without the hype

Climate-aligned models were everywhere. One critique of climate tech is that it’s often pushed by investors, not pulled by consumers — but the startups attracting funding are solving immediate, monetizable problems:

• Insuring smallholder farmers against crop failure

• Turning waste cooking oil into revenue-generating biofuel feedstock

• Replacing petrol, a costly input motorcycle taxi drivers contend with, with cheaper electric alternatives.

Similarly, while ‘AI-powered’ is often more hype than substance, African startups are leveraging AI to build tools to solve specific customer problems:

• Automating Arabic-language workflows that currently require human labor

• Cutting shoplifting losses that directly hit retailer margins

• Connecting brands to influencers where discovery is genuinely fragmented and trust matters

Building in hot spaces often leads to innovation theater. But startups being funded aren’t chasing investor fads, they’re solving concrete customer pain points.

Deal of the Week

🏍️ Spiro, an electric motorcycle company and battery-swapping network operating in six African countries, raised $100M in an unspecified venture round.

The round is the largest-ever in Africa’s electric mobility sector; $75M came from Afreximbank’s Fund for Export Development in Africa (FEDA), with the rest coming from either “an unnamed venture capital firm” (according to the FT) or “other strategic investors” (according to TechCrunch & other media platforms).

Proceeds of the round will be used to expand the company’s battery swapping network, enter new markets (Cameroon, Tanzania), scale local manufacturing/assembly capacity, and integrate renewable energy into swap stations.

About Spiro: Spiro’s origins began in Chennai, India in the mid-2010s with the launch of Makkal Auto, one of India’s first tuk-tuk ride-hailing platforms. The company evolved into M Auto Electric, and by 2021 M Auto began electric vehicle operations in Benin and Togo in conjunction with Arise Integrated Industrial Platforms (Arise IIP) and the African Transformation and Industrialization Fund (ATIF), an Arise IIP affiliate.

Afridigest first covered M Auto in Week 22 2022 after the startup, which had just ~300 motorcycles in circulation at the time, raised a then-undisclosed (now-reported $20-65M) from ATIF.

Revenue model: Spiro generates revenue through two streams: (1) bike sales and financing partnerships with financial institutions like KCB, Mogo, and Watu in Kenya, and (2) battery-swapping subscriptions.

Battery-swapping is Spiro’s profit engine — by retaining ownership of the ~100K batteries in use and charging per swap, Spiro achieves economies of scale while riders save 20-50% on operating costs versus petrol/combustion motorcycles.

Key metrics & successes:

• Spiro says it has deployed over 60,000 electric motorcycles and 1,500 battery swap stations across Africa, and has 100,000+ batteries in circulation.

• Spiro riders have completed over 26M battery swaps and traveled 800M+ kilometers to date.

• The company dominates Kenya’s EV market, controlling ~90% of all electric vehicles and over 50% of electric motorbikes.

• In addition to Kenya, Spiro also operates in Uganda, Rwanda, Nigeria, Benin, and Togo.

• The company operates assembly plants in Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda, and Nigeria where it builds motorcycles from completely knocked-down (CKD) kits imported from China via its partner Horwin, which designs and manufactures its motorcycles

Go deeper: According to the CEO, Africa has just ~25M motorbikes vs. 320M in India despite similar populations, signaling massive whitespace and room for various competitors like Ampersand and Max. “Our [real] competition is the gasoline bike segment, both first- and second-hand, and the millions of potential riders who don’t yet own a bike or lack access to affordable transportation and employment.”

Bottom line: Spiro’s aggressive, capital-intensive approach to capturing Africa’s electric vehicle opportunity make it a compelling startup to watch develop in the coming years.
