Hello again, friends! Week 1 2023 was a very quiet one with apparently zero fintech deals announced. So in lieu of the regular Afridigest Fintech Review, we’re excited to bring you something new & shiny :)
We’ve painstakingly compiled all the deals we tracked from Week 1 to Week 52 last year into a new Afridigest 2022 Fintech Transactions Database ✨ In it, you’ll find all fintech transactions — equity VC financings, debt financings, and M&A deals — that were publicly disclosed across Africa's tech ecosystem in 2022.
Not bad, right? We’ll also be regularly updating the database going forward, and here’s the kicker: it’s all available at no extra cost — paying subscribers can download the database directly below.
If you’re not yet a paying Afridigest subscriber, you’ll be stopped by a pesky paywall. But what are you waiting for? Now’s a good time to upgrade or go for a trial to check it out. And we plan to do quite a bit more in this vein to beef up the value subscribers get in the weeks and months ahead. Stay tuned. 🙏🏽

In 2022, ~200 African fintech startups raised ~$1.6B across ~240 announced equity fundraises — an average of 20 deals and ~$130M raised per month.

There was a pronounced slowdown in the second half of the year, however:

Nevertheless, here’s who led the way:

Payments & Lending not only led the year’s largest fintech equity fundraising rounds, they lead more broadly as well.

32% of announced fintech fundraises last year went to Banking/Lending startups and 30% went to Payments/Cards/Loyalty startups:

And beyond equity and debt financing, it was also an interesting year for fintech M&A across Africa with ~30 deals announced throughout the year — here’s a look at 10% of them:

That’s just a sampling of what’s in the database.

If, for example, you're interested in:

  • Seeing the investors leading fintech rounds in Africa at a glance

  • Identifying the debt providers that are financing fintech lenders in Africa

  • Getting detailed sub-vertical category listings (to be able to, for example, identify all digital banking platforms or all open finance players that raised money in 2022)

  • Identifying global fintech startups that are active or soon to be active in African markets

  • Exploring the full set of ~240 equity venture capital fundraises, 30+ fintech debt financings, and ~30 M&A transactions that were announced in 2022

Then this database is for you.

It’s the most comprehensive and accessible one available on disclosed fintech transactions — equity VC financings, debt financings, and M&A deals — across Africa's tech ecosystem in 2022.

And we’ll be updating it with 2023’s transactions moving forward. 😊
